Singer 201K Bobbin Case Removal & Refitting

The class 201 models can normally be cleaned of fluff and lint without removing the bobbin case. However if a piece of thread becomes jammed around the bobbin case, or if grease/debris builds up under the tenson spring so that it will not adjust correctly, then it is necessary to remove the bobbin case from the machine.

Although it is possible to remove the 201 bobbin case with the throat plate in place, it is easier if the throat plate is removed first. This also allows the area around the feed dogs to be cleaned of debris at the same time.

After opening the slide plate and removing the bobbin, turn the balance wheel so that the end of the hook ring (E) is toward the front of the machine as shown. Insert the blade of the small tension screwdriver into the slot (C) between the ring and the edge of the spring. With a downward pressure turn the screwdriver half a turn to the right, so it will drop into the slot and unlock the spring. Hold the balance wheel with one hand to stop it turning, and with the other hand place the screwdriver against the edge of the slot in the ring and push it around until the circular cut-out (B) is opposite the spring (D). The ring and bobbin case can then be lifted out.

Rerfitting 201 Bobbin Case

If the tension spring has been removed from the bobbin case to clean under it, then the bobbin case tension should be recalibrated before refitting the bobbin case. Please refer to our tension calibration page.

When replacing the parts, first place the bobbin case into the hook ring so that the finger (A) locates in the opening in the position plate under the feed dogs, as shown. Turn the bobbin case back and forth to make sure it is correctly seated. Then place the hook ring (E) in position with the cut-out (B) opposite the spring (D). Press the ring into place and turn it in the direction of the hook rotation until the spring locks it in position.

If previoulsy removed, the throat plate can now the refitted.
